Life is Unpredictable: How to Adjust Your Training

Consistency is Key. You’ve heard it over and over. Heck, you have heard it from me in this blog many times. But, life is full of surprises, and we often face unexpected changes that can throw off our training plans. Here are some key tips for making adjustments when life happens.

Stay Consistent with the Basics
One of the most effective approaches is to stick with the basics: steady runs, long runs, and twice-a-week HIIT sessions (similar to strides). Consistency in these types of workouts can lead to significant improvements, even when your schedule is unpredictable. If you can't get to a specific location for a workout or lack the energy for a hard session, remember that a steady run is always a good option. By defaulting to these fundamental workouts, you ensure continued progress.

Shorten Your Workout, Not Your Effort
When time is tight, a shorter, more intense workout can be just as effective as a longer run. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) or a quick tempo run can keep your fitness levels up without requiring a full hour. Focus on quality over quantity.

Make the Most of Your Mornings
Early mornings can be a runner’s best ally. By starting your day with a run, you’re less likely to encounter conflicts that arise later. Plus, morning runs can boost your mood and energy levels for the rest of the day.

Utilize Active Travel
Traveling for work or pleasure doesn’t mean you have to skip your runs. Pack your running shoes and explore new places on foot. Running in a new environment can be fun and provide a fresh perspective. Utilize hotel gyms or look for nearby trails and parks.

Listen to Your Body
Flexibility also means knowing when to rest. If you’re feeling run down or overwhelmed, it’s okay to take a break. Listen to your body and give it the rest it needs. Recovery is a vital part of any training plan and will help prevent injury and burnout.

Communicate with Your Coach
If you have a run coach, keep them in the loop about any changes in your schedule or life events. A good coach will help you adjust your training plan to accommodate your needs without sacrificing your goals.

Stay Positive and Patient
Lastly, maintaining a positive mindset is crucial. Understand that flexibility is not about giving up but about adapting. Be patient with yourself and recognize that every small step counts towards your bigger goals.

In order to be consistent of long periods of time we have to follow our plans the best we can but in a lot of cases our inability to pivot and navigate life’s unpredictability will be what holds us back. Understand your strategies to be flexible when needed and use them in an effort to make long term consistency your biggest goal.
