Let’s Set Targets
Happy New Year!
Yes, every blog on the face of the earth is posting about the new year, goals and resolutions. Let’s make 2023 the year we set Targets. Today we’ll discuss the difference between Target and Goals.
Targets
A basic definition….”the aim of an attack”. The key word in a target is “AIM”. I truly believe the reason resolutions and goals fail is we are missing the point. We should be setting targets, things that we aim to accomplish. Why aim? Because our targets should be challenging and not something that is a guaranteed outcome.
More importantly, targets sure would be nice to hit but as we know with targets in archery…often times we miss. And in missing we identify why we missed, we improve and hope to hit a bullseye next time.
Goals
Goals on the other hand are the small daily, weekly and monthly steps that make the target possible. Lets give an example in running. The target may be to finish your first 5k, half marathon or qualify for the Boston Marathon. This is what you are aiming to accomplish but many factors play into if you hit a bullseye or miss.
We should set short term goals that increase our chances of a bullseye. These could be improve sleep pattern, eat more real food, train consistently. These become goals that can be accomplished daily and support the target.
Take Action
My last bit of advice is with Goals. Be sure they are not generic like what I listed above. Take the next step to make them specific. Ask yourself, “how am I going to meet these goals”. Example: Train Consistently should be “Run 4 Days Per Week”.
I have utilized a great Targets/Goals Worksheet with my athletes for year. If you are interested, complete the form below and I’d be happy to share it with you for free.
